Bring the Choir Back – How Heavenly Choirs Inspire Earthly Discipleship

The chorus of “O Come All Ye Faithful” rings in churches every Christmas season, summoning us to “Come let us adore Him.” There’s a powerful message of inclusivity in these seasonal lyrics that mirrors the diversity demonstrated in the Christmas story itself.

When the angel appeared to the shepherds, a multitude of heavenly hosts proclaimed, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). From Mary and Joseph’s humble beginnings to the shepherds working in the fields to the wise men traversing far with gifts to honor the newborn King, the narrative displays God’s vast invitation.

The apostle Paul urges the church to “accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you” (Romans 15:7). The church choir presents a unique opportunity to model gospel inclusivity while facilitating meaningful discipleship.

Much like the first Christmas, choirs bring together people of all ages and backgrounds with the unifying purpose of lifting their voices in praise. The Psalms frequently speak of praising God in song (Psalm 96:1, Psalm 98:1, Psalm 149:1). In this pursuit, robust discipleship emerges:

– Serving together builds relationships across generations and forges bonds in the body of Christ. Veterans guide novices, and friendships emerge, displaying Jesus’s command to “love one another” (John 13:34).

– Committing to weekly rehearsals demonstrates discipline in pursuing excellence to glorify God. Other priorities take a backseat as choir members heed the call to “do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

– Worshipping in song provides a creative outlet to express adoration and gratitude. Hearts unite, burdens lift, and spirits soar as voices join together in praise.

– Attending to missed practices or struggling members exhibits loving accountability. Grace abounds as patience is learned and believers sharpen one another (Proverbs 27:17).

The Christmas season spotlights choir participation, but these opportunities for discipleship can thrive year-round. Just as the angels proclaim glorious news for all people, church choirs help us proclaim glorious news together.

The lights dim as the first familiar notes resonate through the sanctuary. Rows of choir members raise their candles and voices in unison to glorify the newborn King. “O come, let us adore Him” echoes from the platform as beloved carols nostalgically transport us back to that holy night. We stand in awe of the inclusivity of God’s invitation. But when the candles are extinguished and sheet music stored away, are we missing gospel opportunities right under our noses? Have choirs become an afterthought rather than a priority in spiritual formation?

Just as God leveraged diverse voices on that inaugural Christmas, it’s time churches today recognize choir participation as a powerful discipleship tool intended for more than seasonal showcasing. This model of unity in diversity goes back to Scripture’s roots. It’s time to bring the choir back to leverage spiritual growth and community fully.

Choirs open doors to accelerated spiritual growth and fulfilling service. The blessings extend far beyond members alone to the broader church. Join the choir and advance God’s kingdom! “Come, let us adore Him.”
