As a worship leader I’ve always found learning the story behind a song provides it with so much meaning. I have been given volumes of hymn story collections that provide wonderful insight into the songs the church loves to sing.
This has inspired me to give some short background on different songs Bec and I have written, and why they carry so much meaning.
“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” (Ephesians 5:2)
Ephesians teaches the Christian community how to walk properly. The word “walk” is utilized many times throughout the text. The phrase “walk in love” stood out to me one morning in my reading as this song began to grow. Here are few highlights I’ll mention about the song and it’s meaning in my life
- Despite our best effort to walk in love, we fail – Take courage Christ presents you blameless before God, because of His love we can continue to walk in love.
- Love is fruit born of the Spirit of God – Humbly yielding to the Spirit of God daily will allow our lives to produce fruit. Walking in love is directly connected to producing the fruit of the Spirit. (Eph 5:8)
- The answer to Jesus prayer “Thy Kingdom Come” is answered as others choose to “walk in love” – A sermon I read many years ago by Charles Wesley on the Lord’s Prayer highlighted a truth I’ve never forgotten. When we think of the phrase “thy kingdom come” we infer only the future kingdom that will come in the final day. Wesley pointed out that the kingdom of God “is at hand”, it is present even now with us. Every time someone choose to place faith in Christ they become part of that heavenly kingdom. I am convinced that as children of God when we choose to “walk in love” we are the greatest witness and testimony to the gospel. When others see this testimony and believe on Christ they begin there journey to “walk in love” – in that moment the Lord’s prayer is answered.
My favorite lyric from the song, “As your child, I follow willingly so this broken world might see your kingdom come through me, and walk in love.”
